Differences between bamboo and rattan

 

Many people mistake bamboo and rattan as the same species but in reality, there are several distinctions to differentiate between bamboo and rattan or wicker rattan, concerning the roots of origin and usage.

 

Bamboo:

                   

Bamboo owns strength, flexibility and versatility as its inherent features. The culms have been used mainly in housing and for other building purposes for centuries, particularly in rural areas. Other functions of bamboo are plentiful and varied. It is used in the making furniture, rayon, basket ware, matting, handicrafts and paper, and it is also used as food, fodder and fuelwood. In India, for instance, much of the pulp used in manufacturing paper is from bamboo, just as it is in China. In Japan, Taiwan, China and Thailand, shoots of many species are valued worthy as food. Comparatively few species of bamboo are, nevertheless, currently used on a commercial scale.

Rattan:

 

The bare stem of climbing rattans owns its strength, flexibility and uniformity as its main patterns. It is used in the construction of cane furniture and matting of the commercial trade. Due to poor mechanical properties, comparatively few species are currently used on a commercial scale. In rural areas, a larger proportion of rattan species has been used for centuries for myriad purposes, for example, cordage, construction, basketry, thatching, matting and the like.

In conclusion, there is the difference between bamboo and rattan or wicker rattan as follows:

Wicker Rattan

·         Rattan is a solid timberline that is quite flexible, can be woven into wicker.

·         Wicker rattan is a woven product made from rattan cane.

·         Rattan cane is native mainly to the tropical rain forests in Indonesia, and from some plantations, but it is not widely cultivated.

·         As one of the commercial product, rattan is mostly restricted to use in the furniture and household accessories industry, although in rural areas it is widely used to weave baskets, mats and thatched roofs.

·         Both bamboo and wicker rattan are categorized as sustainable products for their fast-growing properties.

Bamboo

·         Bamboo is a tropical woody grass with hollow stems.

·         Bamboo can grow in various different types of climate and is widely commercially farmed.

·         Bamboo is used to make flooring, furniture, handcrafted items, baskets, clothes and paper, and it is used for food and fuel as well.

·         Both bamboo and wicker rattan are classified as sustainable products due to their fast-growing properties.

·         Bamboo cannot be bent, therefore it is never woven.
